What Does Recreational Vehicle Insurance Cover?
The scope of recreational vehicle insurance is wide. We’re here to help you navigate the policies and options to best protect your recreational vehicles, including:
- Snowmobiles
- Boats
- Jet Skis and Other Personal Watercrafts
- ATVs/Four Wheelers
- Motorhomes, Campers, Travel Trailers and Fifth-Wheels
- Golf Carts
- And more!
Types of Recreational Insurance Coverage
Certain recreational vehicles are covered similarly to motor vehicles. That means you can expect coverage for RVs like motorhomes to include policies for:
Collision Coverage – For RVs damaged in an accident, this coverage will help with expenses related to repairs or replacement.
Comprehensive Coverage – Incidents unrelated to collisions, such as severe weather damage or theft, fall under comprehensive coverage.
Liability Coverage – If you’re liable for damages to another person or object when using your RV, liability helps mitigate the costs of repaying for those damages.
Underinsured or Uninsured Coverage – Because some types of insurance are optional or have limits, this type of insurance is important to protect yourself when someone causes damage to you or your property but cannot fully repay the medical or repair expenses.

Do I Need Recreational Vehicle Insurance?
This answer often depends on your vehicle. A good rule of thumb is the “two-wheel rule.” Any vehicle that has more than two wheels is likely to be determined a motor vehicle by Michigan law, and require similar protections you would expect of any motor vehicle.
For other recreational vehicles, you may not legally need insurance – but that doesn’t mean you should skip it! Recreational vehicles often are more likely to be involved in incidents where you’ll be glad you had them insured. Accidents during travel or use are common, and these vehicles are just as expensive to repair as any other type of vehicle. Keeping yourself protected against medical costs or just getting your toy back in working condition as soon as possible is always worth the small investment of recreational vehicle insurance.
